This story was told to East Ayrshire Library staff during their Tea Party of 11th June 2004 by Margaret Wilson (maiden name Mitchell)
Margaret was about 17 at the start of the war and remembers carrying gas masks to the school every day. You were sent home if you didn’t bring it with you to school. The school had drills for using gas masks and there was always the fear of air raids.
All Margaret’s uncles were called up for action and she had 6 uncles.
William served in the Royal Fusiliers and died aged 24 in India. He used to send letters home and was awarded a medal.
Jimmy was in the Royal Navy
Archie, Jackie and Hughie served in the Army too
Charlie was in the Royal Marines and when he came on leave he brought tins of food including the luxury of tinned fruit – which was shared round the family. Other brothers brought home plastic raincoats when on leave.
