WAR - A BOY - LONDON
Born 1938 , I am writing down memories, impressions, feelings, hazy recollections and what has been passed on to me from members of my family.
I was approx 9 months old when ww2 broke out, living with my family in a council house in s.e. london, three boys and one girl, I was the youngest, my father was in the army, my mother looked after us all. When the bombing was bad we were evacuated to relations in S.wales, our grandmother ,grandfather, aunts uncles and cousins (my mother was born in abertilery monmouthshire). Our war was spent between London and Wales, so there are memories of both. I am starting with London as most of the memories of the war years are most relevant here.
I am trying to convey what it was like for a very young boy during the war, the first thing I would like to say is that throughout the entire war as far I was concerned I cannot remember these times as being something to be very afraid of, quite the reverse, they were very often exciting, this may have been because of my age, but I think that it is because everybody seemed to be in the same position as our family. Times were tough, there were incredible dangers, homelife was hard compared to today, fathers were away fighting, but this was the way things were, you were surrounded by people in the same position and you just accepted it.
The stories that follow are broken down into small sections to make it easier to pick out any parts that may interest you.
