Our family history of the war is very limited because no one ever spoke of what it was like. I know my maternal grandfather Arthur Vitler fought in the Far East. He has never spoken about his experiences and is now 90. But my paternal Grandfather James Goddard and my Great Uncle Percy Makin were in protected occupations - James was a fireman and Percy worked for the GPO. I'm not sure why Uncle Percy didn't join up but I know my Grandad Jim worked constantly as a fireman fighting the many fires. This was in Sale in Greater Manchester. My Grandfather has never spoken about the Far East and I know now never will - it's an experience he does not want to discuss.
I wish now I had asked questions when I was a child and will encourage my own children to know more about our family history.
