As a child during the war I lived with my Grandparents at Kings Dyke,we kept two pigs one for home use, one for the government. one night Grandfather said "Come on boy we,ll go and shut pigs and rabbits up". Quite dark at this time, going though the process of doing this job we heard the sound of an aeroplane, the usual droning of a German aircraft abovethe next second or so there was the rattle of machinegun fire and swooping in a fighter blazing away at the German all just shapes in the darkness. The next second Grandad grabbed me and flung me in with the pig and shouted " Get in there boy with them pigs before them Jerries kill you" Dont know who was the most surprised, me or the pigs !! This is just a memory of a boy during WW2..Also at home at that time was my Aunt Agness to me an adult, she was allways sharpeningthe carving knife, Granny got fed up with this in the end and said"What do you keep doing that for" the answerwas " In case them Germans come" Gran said " Going to kill a few then" The response was "Noif they get here I"m going to cut his throat( mine ) I"m not going to let going to let those Jerries get him" Who could have an Aunt who thought so much of a nephew as that,I,ll tell you Every time she got that carving knife outIwas gome!!! Hope you like this boys memories of thewar years..
