I was only a child in Kirton-in-Lindsey, Lincolnshire, but my Auntie used to work for the local dairy, and deliver milk in the village in a horse and trap milk float. When she collected the money, like you do, Douglas Bader was living the village (there was a fighter station in the village) and he came to the door, to pay the milkman, without his legs on!!
Also, when I was a kid I used to go to Hemswell to stay with a different Aunt. Hemswell aerodrome was near there. And we used to count the bombers out in the mornng - and then count them back in the evening ... to see how many we'd lost.
