Told to Christine Barker at the VE Day Celebrations in Beverley 2005.

Me and my husband to be were at a dance at Wickersley High School on VE night and he won a prize. I can't remember whether it was for the waltz or if it was a raffle prize. I was 15 at the time and the next day he was going to be 21. He had a choice of a dozen eggs or an iced cake for the prize. Well he didn't want eggs because he already had hens at home so he went for the cake. We were really excited about the cake but when we cut into it it was burnt black inside!
