After landing in Normandy I went on to Antwerp. An incident I remember , after being billeted in a hotel that had been occupied by German officers, the Tables in the dining room were still laid and half-eaten meals on the table.
I was sent to the local POW camp to get some prisoners to help clean up the hotel. I came back with three Russian pow's who had joined the German Army. After they had finished the work, we offered them some food. They would not eat our white bread, but accepted the tinned black bread. We tried to eat it, but it was awful. It appeared to be full of sawdust!
Antwerp was hit quite frequently by V2 Rockets. I saw 2 incidents, the first was as I was about 200 yards from the town square. A V2 rocket exploded in the centre, it was very busy at the time and caused terrible havoc. Several people were killed and dozens injured. The second V2 hit a block of flats as I was driving past. The whole block of flats just collapsed in a pile of rubble.
