As more and more staff entered the armed forces I was given more responsibility. At the very outbreak of war I attended educational classes for a very brief period. As the year progressed I attempted a more active role by joining the local defence volunteers, quickly renamed by Winstion Churchill, the Home Guard. But the constant drilling with broom handles very soon became futile. Much to my relief I gained invaluable experience with the Air Training Corps such as Morse Code, aircraft recognition, rudiments of navigation, comradeship etc.
