this is apicture of me on board HMS JERVIS BAY aged 5 years
imagine if you were 7 years old having to tell your mother and elder sister that your fathers ship had been sunk and that he was probably dead. we had been evacuated to letchworth ,hetrs from bexhill and were living in the top half of a house. one sunday morning i had got up early and was sitting on the stairs listening to the bbc news and i heard that HMS Jervis Bay had been sunk by a german battleship the ADMIRAL SCHEER. i ran upstairs to tell my mother what had happened and was rebucked for telling naughty stories . latter that day she learned the truth that the ship had indeed been sunk and that the captain had been awarded the victoria cross . my father was 2nd in command and died at sea.
