The Japanese sign the surrender

This story was submitted to the People's War Website by Elizabeth Perez of Stockport Libraries on behalf of Pat Flynn and has been added to the site with his permission. The author fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I was on "H.M.S. Ruler", an aircraft carrier, in Tokyo Harbour on 2 September 1945, when the Japanese Admirals arrived on board the "U.S.S. Missouri" to sign the actual surrender with General MacArthur, Chief of Staff of the Allied Forces.
We were on the deck of our ship looking straight across to the "Missouri" and we witnessed the whole ceremony.

When the war finished we got a tot of rum.
