During the 2nd world war his engine was hit by a German bomber 鈥 he pulled his fireman down from the tender & lay on top of him to protect him while the plane flew over. They were shaken but not hurt. The engine limped home and all my father (George) would say about the incident was 鈥淚t was nothing鈥 and produced a lump of shrapnel which landed just by him on the footplate.
