1939-1945
I was 5 years old when the war started.
When the war was on we lived at Fair View Cottage South Carnmarth. I cannot remember exact dates but I do remember clearly the night the tanks were bombed at Swanpool. We must have removed the black-out blind because the flames were so fierce they lit up our bedroom at Carnmarth. The next day we went to Falmouth and walked along the sea front and saw the Hotels had been bombed.
Another night a bomb was dropped at Penstruthal near Redruth and my Mum and brothers and I went under the kitchen table. My dad was working night shift at Crofty Mine. My youngest brother Richard was only a baby and had a gas mask that he had to be put into.
Another night guns which were situated at the back of Carnmarth went off and we thought someone was kicking our back door in.
I also remember my Mum making pasties with dark flour and us children would not eat them. I expect we got used to them as time went on. There are many things I remember about those days. We did not have much problem with our weight in those days.
