This story was submitted to the People's War site by Louisa Pointon, a volunteer on behalf of Joyce Pointon and had been added to the site with her permission. Joyce Pointon fully understands the site's terms and conditions.

I remember going to school one day in the summer of 1940 when the enemy aeroplanes overhead started flying low to the ground. It was lunchtime and I ran back home instead of going back into school. Later in the evening I later heard that the German aeroplanes had machined gunned the playground where all my classmates were enjoying their lunchtime. Luckily none of the children were killed but it was still a horrific experience.
