During part of the war, when I was 18, I worked in Oxford for Professor Florey who pioneered the use of penicillan. During the air raids I would go to the dugout. There were about 8 of us including evacuees from Germany (Imelda and Ursula).
It was very basic, I'd have thought a Professor would have had a decent shelter.
