My Auntie lived at Burghley Park Lodges, Burghley House Stamford. The following was a favourite teatime recipe.

Sardine Paste

Small tin of sardines in oil
Vinegar to taste
Salt and Pepper
Small amount of margarine

Method
Beat all ingredients together
Put in a dish and press down until solid
Decorate with a little Parsley and leave on the cold slab in the pantry overnight.

To serve spread thinly on hot toast.
