My late uncle served in the Western Desert, amongst other theatres, where he recounted to me that he met General Sir Oliver Leese as would countless other servicemen. After the war General Leese lived at Bridgnorth the lovely Shropshire market town, where he grew cactii, apparantly he was a expert in this field. My uncle at the same time worked at MOD Featherstone,Wolverhampton. {now HMP Featherstone}where General Leese got his boxes for his cactii. One day some years after the war they met again and to my uncles astonishment General Leese remembered him, his rank and their meeting!I find that truly amazing considering all the thousands of our troops he must have met during his time in the Western Desert.
