This story was submitted to the People's War website by Luke Taylor of Finedon Mulso Junior School on behalf of Jean Carr and has been added to this site with her permission. Jean fully understands the site's terms and conditions.
Jean Carr and her friends used to sneak away to a little hide away which was a World War 1 air raid shelter. They sneaked sweets into the hide out. One day the teacher saw them go to the hide out and they were forbidden to go there again and if they did they would have detention for the rest of the term. When Jean went home she heard an air raid siren and she ran down to the family’s half-built shelter but she couldn’t shelter there because it was not finished. So they had to go to the next door neighbour’s shelter. They sang ‘Kiss me good night Sergeant Major’, ‘Hey little Hen’ and ‘we’ll meet again.’
She was an evacuee from Lincoln and she went to her auntie’s house in Derbyshire.
