I was working for a Co-op bakery as a delivery boy. My driver and I with our horse and cart had left the stables at Catford and we proceded towards the Lewisham Clock Tower. We continued up through South Street towards Greenwich and at one point we stopped as the air raid warning had been sounded and enemy aircraft were overhead. We stopped to comfort the horse and as I looked back towards Catford I saw an enemy bomber drop a bomb. I watched it fall but instead of exploding it bounced up again, quite high, and when returning to earth, changed its direction but still no explosion.
On returning to the stable in the evening the groom pointed out to me a new addition to the yard, it was the bouncing bomb, it was,in fact one of the wheels from the bomber. Luckily it landed in the manure heap and did no damage.
If the bomber did manage to return to Germany, it would have been a rough landing.
