They (the Americans) used to come down to the brook to wash their lorries and we used to go down to the brook because they used to give us chewing gum, and you know what the Yanks were like with kids - they were very fond of children They used to wash all these big lorries and they used to talk to all these kids and they were very nice actually, and they used to give us things to bring home: chewing gum and all that, little bits of chocolate and everything like that; I think they thought the English people were starving because we were on rations you see, and they weren't - they got everything but we were on rations and I'm sure they thought we were starving but we were not and we were far healthier than they are today.
