I was about 13, doodlebugs or flying bombs as they were known, had been coming for a while now so people were going about without realy worrying too much, also got a warning when the when the engine cut out. On this particular afternoon, or early evening I was doing my paper round. An air raid warning had gone off quite a bit earlier, but as I said you didn't take much notice, you always had time yo take shelter. I was delivering newspapers in Douglas Avenue Walthamstow, when I noticed a doodlebug coming towards me, the engine must of cut out earlier, as I didn't hear it. I stood rooted to the spot when all of a sudden someone threw me to the ground at the corner of Douglas Terrace and Douglas Avenue, and then fell on top of me. There was a terrible explosion, our bodies bounced off the road. Then there was debris falling on us and it had knocked all the air out of me.
When we got up I saw that it was the postman who had thrown me down. The doodlebug had fallen about 100 yards down the road in Douglas Avenue. I was very dazed and just walked through the rubble that was in the road, a few minutes earlier had been houses. I never knew the name of the postman.
