We are the D-Day Dodgers out in Italy.
We landed at Salerno, holiday with payn.
Jerry had the band out to cheer us on the way.
He showed us the sights and gave us tea.
We all sang songs, the beer was free.
Look around the mountains, -
In the mud and rain
You will see a lot of crosses,
Some that bear no name.
Heartbreak. Pain and suffering.
The boys beneath will never sing.
We are the D-Day Dodgers in Italy...

Message 1 - D Day Dodgers in Italy

Posted on: 31 January 2006 by Trooper Tom Canning - WW2 Site Helper

Mr Mather -
once again I take up my pen to lecture you on your efforts - this subject had been written about more than a year ago and contained a thread which went to some 80 postings - many versions of this song was sung all through the campaign after Lady Astor had put her foot in it once more. You have merely quoted the first and last verses of the most popular version. Search for theD Day Dodgers on the portion set aside for searching and you will see the full story.
Cheers
Tom Canning
