We , my Mother , Sister and I , were staying with our Grandparents at number 134 Camrose Avenue , Edgeware , in early 1945.
Around this time there were quite a few V1's -
called "Doodle-Bugs" or "Buzz- Bombs"- dropping in and around Edgeware and Burnt Oak.
One night there were quite a lot - it was a cloudless night and I could see them from my bedroom window, as well as the large orange explosions when they landed.
Grandfather thought it was best we used the Anderson Shelter in the back garden - this for the first time ever - and shepherded us all downstairs and out the back door.
He was the first to descend into the shelter , below ground , about four steps down, only to
step into about two feet of freezing water.!!
Needless to say none of us could be persuaded to follow suit and we returned indoors to the comfort , if not the safety , of our beds !!
