When I was 15 years old, I and five of my friends went to join the National Fire Service. We told them that we were 18 years old, which was an obvious lie because at 18 you were called up for the armed forces; but they were so desperate for people they accepted us.
We did our training, then were stationed in a building in the Inner Temple. From there we were sent to different fire stations in the city, such as Carmelite Street or Clerkenwell.
I attended many fires and incidents: one I particularly remember is we were at a fire all saturday night early sunday morning. We were having a break and a cup of tea at a Salvation Army mobile canteen when a V1 came down and landed on Wellington Barracks Chapel killing many guardsmen.
