Born 1936. Thanks to the Fuhrer, evacuated from 41 to 43, initially with my mother and sister. Mother had to return home to London to protect house.

I was with a family called the Boneys for 6 weeks, then my mother visited and threatened trouble because I was covered in dirt, lice and fleas. I was shaved and soaked in dettol, and to save the embarrassment of the village taken in by the local smithy and his wife, where my sister was billetted.

The wife was Austrian and had an Austrian friend in the village. I was disliked by the village kids (normal) and also the London refugee kids, because I was living with a German. (She used to talk to her friend in German.) I still go and visit my 'aunt', who is about 90 now. She runs around in a smart car.

One birthday a bicycle arrived for me, brought in by my sister saying Mum had sent it. I thought she had been and not seen me, I was very upset. The truth was Mum had sent it up by train.

Message 1 - small details

Posted on: 05 November 2003 by magoosy

I've noticed before that when people talk about the war (or any traumatic thing) it is often the small personal details they recall vividly... the embarrasment, the lice, this man's devastation at thinking his Mum had been and gone when he got the bike. This is what I meant in my article - it happened to real people with real feelings, it is not a page from a history book. I often sit next to people on the bus and wonder - (I'm 47) - what did you live through? And you, and you, and you?
Thankyou for this story...
