My mother was working in service in Kingswood Warren and her eldest brother, Bobby Elliott from Blackhall, Co. Durham, was in the regular navy and on the Royal Oak in Scapa Flow at the beginning of the war. She told me the following -
The story goes that Grandmother woke around 12.30- 1.00am on the morning of October 14th 1939 as she 'heard' Uncle Bobby knocking at the back-door. My Grandfather said this was not possible as he was on standby on his ship. There was, of course, no-one at the door as at that very time the ship was blown up by torpedoes from a German submarine that had infiltated the harbour. My grandmother 'went grey over night' and never really recovered from the shock of losing her eldest son.
