When my late husband was a little boy growing up on the Isles of Wight, he was at the local village school during the war. He had a vivid memory that stayed with him all his life. As the war planes flew back to Germany or France they used to jettison their excess load on the I.of W. on their way home. He had in his school a littl french girl who was a refugee, she spoke very little english and when the sirens went off and the children huddled in the air-raid shelter frightened out of their wits this little girl used to stand on a chair and sing at the top of her voice the french national anthem "the Marsellaise".The other children hadn't a clue what she was singing about but just the fact she wasn't frightened too gave them courage. He often wondered what happened to her as he said she was so brave and fearless. Throughout his life when ever he felt scared or frightened he always thought of her,and when ever he heard the tune it brought her memory back to him
