I joined the army in February 1942 during the Second World War at the age of eighteen, and was sent to a camp which was an Infantry Training Centre, but after about 6 weeks and after various tests a number of soldiers were
transferred to other Units of the Army.
There were three of us sharing a hut and two of us were transferred, David joined the Royal Artillery, and I joined the Royal Ordinance Corp. Bill stayed in the Infantry and was later killed in action in Italy.
After a while I was posted overseas and sailed with many others in a Troopship from Scotland. We sailed due North for days and then East to within a few miles of the coast of the USA and then south until we were able to turn east and pass though the straits of Gibraltar, eventually arriving in EGYPT and the SUEZ CANAL. After a few days on land we joined a smaller ship and sailed through the INDIAN OCEAN to the port of MOMBASA in EAST AFRICA.
It had taken three weeks to reach MOMBASA,and you can now fly there in less than one day.
We then travelled by train to NAIROBI, the capital of KENYA.
After a few months I was sent to Northern Somaliland to BERBERA and passed through MOGADISHU and what is now ERITREA.
I was overseas for three years, and eventually became a staff sergeant at Headquarters at NANYUKI in KENYA. I was discharged from the Army at the age of twenty three.
Nanyuki is an interesting place because it is on the Equater, and you can cross from the Northern Hemisphere to the Southern Hemisphere several times a day if day if you wish
