Climbing the Radar

I worked in the WAAF as a radar operator. I was based on the South Downs, but got moved around. On the bases we had large towers which the men had to climb to do maintenance on the radar equipment. When they were at the top, the planes would be buzzing round their heads.

I remember on one occasion they got me to climb up one of these towers — not a job for a woman. It was a rather terrifying climb as it was a hell of a long way! Anyway, when I got to the top, I got stuck and couldn’t get down. They had to come up and rescue me!
