After the war my grandfather policed Europe after having fought through Italy ending up in Udine. Basil told me a story as a boy, which remains with me to this day.
He was in an Austrian village and whilst off duty visited a local bar. Upon leaving and walking down the dark streets, people started running past him, into houses, shutting doors slamming windows. He could hardly see but continued on only to be confronted by a shadowy figure, holding what seemed to be a knife. Acting quickly he went for the mans midrift pushing him to the ground. The knife entered Basil's shoulderblade and as he stood up holding the man down with his foot, the knife entered his ankles. The local people started to come out of their houses, seeing the incapacitated man on the ground. They took him away whilst hailing Basil as some sort of hero, although he thought nothing of it.
Basil later discovered the local man had terrorised the locals for months and had been hauled off and hanged by the Villagers.
