Merchant navy William Sibley story
In 1939 I was evacuated to Kent, whereI was billeted with Mrs. Deed, the chief magistrate of Sevenoaks. This was the first time I had ever seen a bathroom. After four months she passsed me to Lord Stanhope at Chevening House in Kent where I live there for 18 months. We where bombed there but it landed in a bath and did not explode. I saw the battle of Britain; we would go to the sites of aircraft crashes to see what we could pinch. So often we saw the dead bodies of the crew. After three years at Westminster College, studying hotel keeping and cookery, I joined the merchant navy in 1944 by putting my age up by two years. My trips took me to Italy, Africa, Egypt,India and Europe. I left the sea in 1947 to join the Metropolitan Police Force.
