During the war, I was stationed in the Midlands, living on an ROAC Depot. I was in the ATS.
Close by was a Division of Paratroopers who were well known to us. One day, they were all confined to barracks so we knew that they were going off somewhere.
Next day, there was a terrific noise in the air and we dashed outside. What a sight to see. The sky was full of planes — small planes, medium planes, large planes pulling gliders. The sky was black with them and the air fairly shivered with the noise as they went over.
We did not know where they were going but we stood and watched until the last one was gone and as silence fell, we wished them God Speed and said a prayer.
Later, we learned a new name, which we have never forgotten.
