I was a pupil at Norwich School in the
Cathedral Close through the war years. When the war began the school air-raid shelter was the crypt of the school chapel. Not only was it a considerable distance from the classrooms but access was down some narrow twisting stone steps. When some official inspectors came and an alert was pretended the men said that if the school was to continue adequate new shelters would have to be formed with entry directly from each of the three teaching areas.
In the summer of 1940 the long summer holidays began on July 1st and we were booked to return on September 1st. However the construction work took much longer than expected. Towards the end of August a note came saying term would definitely start on September 28. Most of us pupils thought it was great to have such a long holiday but parents rebelled when they got bills for a full length term. Thereafter we spent many long hours down those shelters until the advent of the 'Crash Warning' scheme came in.
