During the war with the rationing on, my mother had to think of different ways of cooking. She used to ask me to go down to the butchers and get a sheeps head, and go into the green grocers and get two penny worth of pot herbs. And along with every other vegetable she could lay her hands on, plus barley she would put this sheeps head and all the ingredients into a big aluminium pot of which she had two, and of course with this she would make a very appetizing soup.
I still have two of my mother鈥檚 aluminum pots and they are marked on the outside, 14 pints, so that gives you some idea of the size of them.
During the war the Isle of Man was used as a military base for the RAF, the navy and the officer corps. On the north of the island there were two airports, one at Jurby, and one at Andreas. The Jurby airport was used to train bomber command crew, that鈥檚 pilots navigators and gunnery. The Andreas airport was for training Spitfire and Hurricane pilots. Planes from airports in the UK flew to Jurby for various reasons and there were two unfortunate accidents, one was by an Avro plane which crashed into Snae Fell because of poor visibility. One crew member was thrown clear but the other three crew members died. Another crash involved a flying fortress from the US air force, which again because of poor visibility crashed into North Barrule. All crew members perished.
