During the Plymouth blitz my father and I would travel to Plymouth almost daily with a lorry. On the way into Plymouth we would pick up people who had fled to the countryside to avoid the bombing we would let them off in Plymouth and then load furniture and other effects to take out to various locations - we would also have people climbing on the lorry wings, running boards and sides of the lorry to get out again to the countryside for the night. At home in Wadebridge we would see every night the fires and explosions of the bombs in Plymouth.
I personally was in the Homeguard and used to go to a designated high point for the night watch in event of an invasion. We only had a few rifles but had our 12 bore shot guns with cartridges that fired a solid lead ball or one with nine lead balls.
