I was in the St. George’s 2 Scout Group. We had mock air raids and the Scouts were used as patients. I was put in the Circle of the old Gaumont Cinema with a label on me stating that I had a fractured spine.

Along comes a fireman who throws me over his shoulder, climbed onto a roof and then on to a ladder and carried me down to the pavement. I was laid on a stretcher and a first-aider placed me in splints. I was taken to a car park where a kid let off tear gas. I couldn’t put on my gas mask because my hands were tied!
