I was in Italy when the war ended, Norman Wigglesworth, number PGX652232. Serving in Hunt class destroyer, Exmoor. I was an operator of twin 4" guns and I was a buoy jumper. I joined at the age of 17 and a half, and three months later was sent overseas. I served 3 years and 10 months in the navy leaving in the summer of 1947. I served in the Meditteranean fleet in Greece and Egypt. I lived initally in York and now live in Carack.
My gun firing duties made me deaf. My ship was bombed in drydock in Eqypt, where the ship was being cleaned. We could not fire the guns as the ship was empty and would have fallen over.
When in Portsmouth I was looking after 20 - 30 British Naval prisoners, most prisoners were arrested for deserting post. They were being sent from Portsmouth to Liverpool and were shackled together, by train with no refreshments. I hated looking after the prisoners.
Whilst on a destroyer in Greece I worked as taking Greek Nationalists prisoner and putting them in a temporary prison. I hated doing this.
