Interview with his Maternal Grandma, Oriel (nee Taplin) of Cheriton, Hampshire, by Ewan, 23/12/2004
Q Where did you live in 1939
A I must have been in the Sussex area
Q Do you remember how old you were when war broke out?
A I was 18
Q Do you remember the announcement of war breaking out?
A Yes, Mr Chamberlain announced that we were at war
Q How were you affected by the war?
A I joined the women鈥檚 Land Army
Q Any happy memories of the war?
A I enjoyed being with the people I worked with and the social life
Q Any sad memories?
A I lost various relations in the war
Q What sorts of jobs did you do in the Land Army?
A I used to do milking and tractor driving, general farming, hay making and so on
Q Any recollections of air raids?
A I remember hearing the doodlebugs flying overhead
Q When did you leave the Land Army?
A At the end of the war in 1945
Q What do you remember about the end of the war?
A That things became suddenly much easier. There was gradually more food around and there weren鈥檛 so many restrictions and the soldiers and sailors and airmen came back from the war.
