One of my special memories of 1944 is of Mr & Mrs Wright and their family who lived in the mining village of Methley, in Yorkshire. I was in a camp nearby, at Methley Hall (now gone) serving in the ATS. The girls from the camp would go into the village where they would be welcomed and dances were arranged on Saturday nights. Several of the girls married village boys. Whenever I had time off I was welcomed into the Wright family and, if I had a 24 hour pass, they would let me stay overnight and would willingly share their food ration.
There was one instance when I was given some leftover liver from the cookhouse to take to the family. Unfortunately I met an officer on the way and had to hide the liver in my handbag. I went in to a local shop and asked for some paper to wrap it up in. in return I offered a few slices of the liver to the shopkeeper. She was so grateful!
I kept in touch with the Wrights after the war and visited Methley again in 1987. I am still in contact with one of the daughters-in-law of the Wrights.
