My father,Francis John Kane, was born in 1922 and brought up in the Govan district of Glasgow, in what can only be described, as absolute poverty. When war was declared, he was conscripted in to the Royal Navy and trained as a gunner, in a camp in North Wales and subsequently sent to join the invasion force bound for North Africa, ther after he was sent through the canal to India, where he joined ships due to take part in the invasion of Burma, then French Indo-China via Singapore.
He never had any home leave and did not subsequently return to Glasgow until 1946/47.
