I started work on 4th Sept 1939 which meant that I didn't qualify for the pay I would have done had I started a day earlier!
I worked at Ordance factory in Nottingham until 1943. Any spare time I was in the Home guard. This involved doing guard duty. People don't know but smokescreens lay along the Trent to stop the River Trent shining in the moonlight when bombers were in the sky.
I was 22 when War finished. On V.E day I was at Chattham Barracks and came back to Nottingham quite illegally.
When we went to Ceylon, we went on an aircraft carrier and printed a daily newsletter, which I still have. I was in Ceylon on HMS Fencer for 15 months. I was in maintenance in an area where the Tamils are now. I was demobbed at the end of 1946.
