Mrs. Stirton, born 1914
I always went to Edinburgh for the shops, to Princes Street. I went to all the big shops, it was great. We used to have our tea, then we went to the gardens. It was the whole day, Mother used to get dead beat. We didn’t go often, it was something new, but we were always worried in case the Germans dropped a bomb.
Oo (we) went up at night, not too late, after work. Mum didn’t like us going to the High Street. We went opposite the big hall in Selkirk, that’s where we went dancing, and concerts and things.
I was never frightened. Mother used to stay wakened, she used to say ‘something might happen while you’re sleeping, but I’ll stay wakened’.
