Freda was very young when World War II started. One of her earliest memories was of a German plane dropping a bomb near her gram鈥檚 house, in a nearby field. Another plane crashed near her house, the German pilot inside then jumped out and ran into the forest. They eventually caught him, but he did not want to return home! He knew that if he returned back to Germany, that the punishment would have been very harsh! In a way, you have to feel pity for the German troops. They didn鈥檛 want to go to war, just like our troops didn鈥檛. They were just doing their jobs.
Back then, during the war, they rationed food. They also swapped food with neighbors for things that they wanted. Of course nearly all of their food was homemade. Sometimes she had oranges, but most of the time it was just apples. Not like today when you can just go to the local supermarket and buy any fruit or vegetables you want. Back then she hadn鈥檛 even seen a banana before! She was very lucky, because sometimes her Uncle sent her parcels of tea. Another Uncle, from Canada, sent her parcels filled with lovely things to eat.
During this very difficult time, she did not have a lot of the luxuries like we do today. Like, for instance, there was no toilet roll for them to use, only newspaper that they had to tear into squares, and hang on the toilet wall with a piece of string. Also her father used to work in the docks during the war. But, like all of the other families, they just had to get on with their lives the best they could.
Thank you very much Freda - Rebecca Lowther and Sean Scott
