Six years of age, playing on the sand with Aunt Mary, Florence my Mother and Aunt Gertrude had gone off for a sea trip to Ilfracombe. Suddenly my idyllic world was turned around.WAR was declared. I was dragged off the beach back to the Hotel, belongings thrown into bags, rushed to where the boat docked ,I guess my thoughts of never seeing Mum and Auntagain were enhanced as every one seemed to be rushing in different directions, and PANIC prevailed everywhere. The staff at the Hotel had all gone, the cat was having kittens, Blackout material being nailed up to the windows,it was too late to return home that night.Mum took over the kitchen, and sorted the food.Next day there were many children of all ages walking by the hotel EVACUEES, a new word to most of us, but was it to be safe anywhere? We all thought that we would never see HOME again.A very wet journey home sitting in the back of the Hillman car WP 4406 the roof leaked and the umbrella useless. Somewhere enroute to Malvern we saw Barrage Ballons,Invasion must be about to happen,So started the dreadful WAR YEARS
