This story was told to Gordon Anderson by Harold
Word had reached me that my older Brother Kenneth was in Sfax a mere 90 miles away from our position in Sousse North Africa. My officer in charge from Sheffield had authorised I could meet my brother the next day via a lift from a 1500 weight truck, leaving at 6am.
After 3hrs on the road, we arrived, to find out my brothers Unit had moved, position, I enquired about a lift back to camp as I did not know where he had moved to, a Jeep had stopped asking if I needed a lift and asked which direction I was going, I explained to the soldier what had happened, he replied saying my brothers unit had arrived by the side of his unit that morning, so I was pleased as punch. I met up with my brother Kenneth later that day and had a cup of tea together and spent the afternoon together.
It was time to leave about 7pm I wasted no time in thumbing lifts back to camp, there were various camps along the road which enabled me to gain about twenty miles when I came across an French lady with her six year old son, who had been walking since 9am that morning, she asked me if they could tag along as it would be easier for her to get a lift, I duelly agreed and put the son on my shoulders, in the distance I could see lights, so I lit up a cigarette and waved it in the Air to stop the vehicle. The vehicle stopped and it was the French Foreign Legion going all the way back to Sousse... a long day but very enjoyable...
