I never knew my great great Uncle Robert. He died before I even got to know his last name. He lived until I was fourteen years old, and the only memory I had of him was when we would go over to his place in North Hobart in Tasmania, Australia. It wasn't until after he died, I was told the full story of what happened to him.

Uncle Robert fought with his fellow aussie soldiers in the Pacific war and was captured by the Japanese. He was taken to Changi and stayed there, until the Japanese surrended. His story is a lot like many other POWs who suffered the worst extreme of human atrocity. However Uncle Robert stole away every night to get food for the other soliders, never failing, an action if caught would have cost him his life. After the Japnese surrended a Japanese General surrended his sword to my Uncle, who took it back with him to Australia. He would always bring it out and show me whenever I would visit him, and being only fourteen at the time, it didn't mean a whole lot to me, but as I have grown older it has.

He never did tell anyone much about his time in Changi, except the part of stealing away every night and getting food for his fellow prisoners, but I can only imagine,
