Dad and one other signalman were with a company of Guards who were carrying their regimental silverware in a large kitbag. They were marched to Dunkirk and then back and forth along the beach apparently with little reason. This kitbag was always carried between two guardsmen in the centre of the column and every half mile or so was laid on the ground and picked up by the next pair without breaking step! Eventually it was laid down in front of Dad and his mate who walked smartly past leaving it for the next pair to pick up. When questioned about this Dad replied he thought the contents were too valuable to be entrusted to mere signalmen. The Guards company complete with the two signalmen and a kitbag of silverware were evacuated from the beach and brought home on board the yacht on which the Prince of Wales spent his honeymoon.
back in England re-training and re-fitting including the introduction of "modern" radio trucks. apparently there were 3,5 and 10 ton Bedford lorries with plywood bodies filled wth radio transmitting and recieving equipment. Later, as D-Day approached armoured versoins were introduced.
