My father arrived home from work one day and said to my mother that she had to get the essentials together as we were leaving in two hours time. My uncle was home on leave and had managed to get the loan of a canvas covered truck. My mother made plans to give our cat to the local butcher, who had been wanting a cat for his shop, I found it heartbreaking leaving the cat like that. In the meantime my mother had got together everything she could and my dad and uncle began loading up the truck. Loading the truck was a bit of a nightmare as they had piled up several hundredweight of coal on top of the french polished dining suite. My mother was in hysterics at this, but my dad wasn't impressed and stopped shovelling. We drove through the late evening to the comparative safety of Essex, or so we thought until we heard a huge explosion as we neared our final destination. We heard afterwards that the Mayor of Chelmsford's house had been hit by a mine. Many years later I told this story to an elderly lady and she said she had been at the Mayor's house with her sister that evening and that they both left early as they were driving ambulances at the time. When the mine hit, they had been extremely lucky, as everyone in the house had been killed.
