My mother, Lily, and my aunt, Grace, lived next door to each other. One day, Grace asked Lily: "If a shot-down German pilot came to your door, what would you do?"
My mother replied: "I would ask him in and make him a meal, then send for the police." Then she added: "Afterall, Grace, he would be someone's son."
Lily and Grace often said that they would "go on munitions", but never did.
Once they slept through an air-raid but got up from bed when the all-clear sounded!
Another time they stood talking outside during an air-raid. Grace said: "It's hailstoning Lily."
"It can't be ... there's not a cloud in sight," replied Grace. The hail was in fact shrapnel from the anti-aircraft guns!
