I was evacuated from Manchester to Darwen in Lancashire. I stayed with a middle aged couple with a small child. The man was a teacher. The couple had wanted a small child like their own, and I was not welcomed. My parents took me home. My father considered that to be sent to Darwen was stupid, since next door in Blackburn was an arms factory that could be bombed.
