The local Home Guard HQ was based at the White Hart Pub in Great Saling. A German plane crashed nearby and its pilot went to the pub to hand himself in. The publican who was the in charge of the Home Guard at Great Saling thought he was drunk and playing tricks and told him to go away.

The German pilot walks into Braintree and surrenders to the police station instead.

How did he know where to go? It turns out that before the war he was a pupil at Felsted School just up the road!
